Bonnie Jean Szyszka, nee Pekie, age 76, of Round Lake; beloved wife of Robert; dear mother of Kathleen (George) Gott and Brian (Lissa) Szyszka; loving grandmother of Samantha, Michael, Daniel, Amber & Grant; cherished great-grandmother of George; fond sister of the late Karen Filkey.

Dear Family and Friends,
Bonnie Jean Szyszka had a hellish 4 years trying to conquer Lung Cancer before succumbing to the disease at 6:20 Friday February 10th 2017. She died peaceful, in her own bed, very little pain. She died one month before her 77 birthday. Between the Radiation, Chemo treatments, all the different medicines, chasing back and forth to Cancer Center of America in Zion Illinois, she decided to call it quits Tuesday! She stopped eating, stopped 24/7 oxygen, and was sleeping most of the time. I tried to make her as comfortable as possible.
On Friday about 2pm I was contacted by Avalon Hospice, I wanted to get some help body washing and feeding her. By 4pm the Hospice Nurse arrived to visit with Bonnie, but before anything could be administered I had to agree that the Chemo she was still taking would stop. After that the Nurse checked her vitals and indicated she was falling, within 2 minutes she had past. The Hospice Service provided me with the support to resolve the daunting tasks of recording death conditions, time of death, Coroner approvals to move Bonnie, and contact funeral home to schedule pickup.
Bonnie and I had a pretty rocky 58 years of marriage but not out of the norm. She decided that living in Skokie for nearly 40 years was too long and we had to move! So for our 65th birthdays she selected Round Lake Valley Lakes community. It was what she always wanted and nothing was going to stop her. So we built a ranch home at 1975 W Greenleaf Dr. Everything was going well until Catherene, her mother, started getting sick. Bonnie started the awesome every other day trip to be with her mother. After Catherene’s passing, life returned to normal. It wasn’t but 4 years when Karen, her sister, was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts. Once again Bonnie was making that same trip until Karen passed in 2014. All this time a spot on her left lung was known but ignored.
Bonnie loved her grandkids, 2 girls, 3 boys and a great grandchild named George! She would do anything for and with them! She was known as Grandma Boo.
Please keep Bonnie in your thoughts and prayers. Wake being held at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie. Burial at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Chicago next to her mother and sister.
Best Wishes, Bob Szyszka
