Thomas D. Hendrickson, age 82, of Morton Grove, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at the Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation, in Skokie, after suffering a stroke, heart failure, and partial blindness on April 11.

Tom graduated from Osceola High School in 1953.  He was in the Navy from 1954 to 1958, serving as an Electrician’s Mate aboard the escort carrier USS Point Cruz.  After the Navy, he went to the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, and Brown Institute, in Minneapolis.

He was united in marriage to Annette, nee Roberts, on May 11, 1963.  At that time, he was working for the Control Data Corp. as a Customer Engineer.  His last place of employment was with the Hadley School for the Blind, in Winnetka, where he worked for 13 years in the Computer Services Dept. until his retirement in January, 2013.

Tom was a man who derived his joy from building and fixing things – electrical, plumbing, woodworking, computers, something in the yard – for a neighbor or a friend, it didn’t matter.  If he didn’t have the tool to do a job, he would often make it from scraps of things he had saved from other projects or from things he had found.  He was never one to let anything go to waste or throw anything out, as he “might need that someday.”  Given how he watched what he ate, only eating what was known to be healthy, his “someday” should have been many years from now.

Most weekends, he would often be found outside in his straw hat and a plaid long-sleeve shirt while tending the yard.  He enjoyed picking raspberries in the garden and planting flowers in the backyard.

Preceded in death by his parents, Doyle and Louise Hendrickson, Tom is survived by his wife, Annette; son, Timothy; brother, Dwaine; sister, Reba Reed; sister-in-law, Stephanie (Norm) Peterson; brother-in-law, William Van Brunt; and many nieces and nephews.

Thanks to our many friends and neighbors for their kindness and prayers.  Special thanks to the physical therapists at Lieberman.
